Well clearly schools all around the world are now hustling and bustling, almost everybody is on an urge to reopen and reschedule as most of us has now learned how to live through Covid 19.
#POST COVID19
Here I am stating down some of the must have displays in an Early Years or Montessori Classroom. If you are planning to teach in one, do note down the following essentials to have in your class to inspire your little ones. Looking at the school budget let’s narrow it down to the most important & basic things.
Carpet Area:
Setting up a Montessori or early years classroom is quite exciting, looking at the most key essential thing in the classroom is the carpet area because children spend most of their classroom hours in that area during their Circle Time or while performing their sensorial and EPL activities.
It’s best if you get your hands on the most colorful and pictorial mats or carpets, as colors add more to the aspects of inspiration.
Unlike those boring already printed calendars it’s best to DIY one for your own class. Introducing something very basic like “What is the day today?” to your kids might be tiring and exhausting here’s how you can make it interesting, listing down few things you can add in your calendar rather then just days and dates.
1. Weather & Climate section with Flash cards.
2. A DIY clock with moveable minute and hour hand.
3. Questions like; “Today is?’ , “Yesterday was?” , “Tomorrow will be?”
4. Flashcards of Days and Dates.
5. Questions like; “How are you feeling today?’ , “How were you feeling yesterday?”
6. Flash Cards of Name of Months
Lets focus on labelling the things in the classroom rather than labeling the kids because every child has versatility and diversity.
Labelling is the most quintessential portrayal of an ECE classroom as labels serves more than just the directions.
The element of language enhancement is there, the element of building a habit of organizing stuff is there when you add labels on each and everything in your class and outside the class (for e.g. Direction to the washroom and so on).
Label everything in both words and pictures! No item is too small or too unimportant. Students should be able to read the pictures and begin to make connections to the words of all items in your classroom.
Make your written labels! If you teach in a monolingual classroom create the labels of the items in each center in language one (for me, it’s English). If you teach in a bilingual or ESL classroom create labels in both languages. English labels should in one color and the second language should be in a different color. Be consistent from center to center- all English labels should be the same color at each center (as should be your second language).
Don’t go between colors because it will confuse students who are learning to read/write in their perspective languages. Remember one way of reading is reading pictures and another is reading words. Students who begin to read words will look at the first letter and it will be easier if they know to always look at the black letters for language one and blue/red/etc. letters for language two. Also, don’t change the sequence. Whatever the order, languages should follow the same order center to center.
Subject Corners:
Subject Corners should be Visually inviting, Resourceful and Spacious, there should be more to explore with in these corners. You can place subject related games in that particular corner, you can attach wall hangings related to the subjects and the list goes on.
You can have separate corners for Math, Science, Language etc.
As this website provides Free Homeschooling Resources of all subjects collect yours too to decorate subject based room corners.
EPL & Sensorial Corner:
All the Montessori Material of EPL & Sensorial can be practiced and kept in another allotted classroom but incase you don’t have access to a spare room, you can always have a safe and secure corner for this material.
You can always have your little reading/library space with in your classroom whether you dedicate a little shelf or a rack to the collection of your far more exciting books or just a corner to sit and enjoy reading the DIY sentence making flashcards or anything that enhances a child’s vocabulary would might turn out as a great option.
The goal is to invite the curious little munchkins towards learning and exploring, making the classroom environment colorful, resourceful and visually jaw dropping will surely attract the curious minds.
