This titled quote “A great teacher isn’t a teacher” coming out of a 7th grader naming Jeff (got it from a research lead by Azul Terronez) is quite a topic to look into.
Have you ever learned great long lasting things outside the classroom ? like riding a bicycle, or learning how to make an egg or may be just tying your shoe laces. All these scenarios took place outside the class didn’t they?
My Father taught me how to ride a bicycle but he is not a teacher hence proved, “great teacher isn’t a teacher” or may be this means a great teacher is not classroom bounded and we just need to add a physical expect to the learning, how does that sound ?
If we were learning how to cook an egg in school firstly we will be given worksheets of a labelled egg and the teacher would probably ask us to first learn the labelled components of an egg and then draw it on a loose paper and if we succeed we might get to eat an egg as a reward? Well in that case a kid would show zero interest and instead of pursuing for the rewarded egg they will be much happier with the lunch their mum made for them & will probably show lack of interest in learning anything until you add a practical or physical expect to their learning experience, giving them a Holistic approach (A holistic approach means to provide support that looks at the whole person, not just their mental health needs. The support should also consider their physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing.
Giving a practical, problem solving learning approach to the kid inside the classroom will not only help the teacher evaluate the child via Formative Assessment.
- It allows students to demonstrate their capabilities while working independently.
- It lets teachers have multiple assessment opportunities.
- It shows the student’s ability to apply skills such as doing research.
- It develops a student’s ability to work with other students, building teamwork and group skills.
- The teacher learns more about the student as a person.
- It helps the teachers communicate in meaningful ways with the student or a team. Being able to give them a meaningful feedback is very important.
It is about extracting the continuous growing outcomes, strengths & Weaknesses from your student. This information helps you to give valuable & actionable feedback to the students so they can improve.
The most important characteristic of formative assessment is it is more like a monitoring process that there are no grades! You can’t measure a student by putting a mark on him. That is why formative assessment makes customized learning more accessible. There is a lot of research that suggests that students that are intrinsically motivated (i.e. they want to learn) outperform students that are extrinsically motivated (i.e. learning to avoid a punishment, like a bad grade, or learning to get a reward, like a good grade). Furthermore, extrinsic rewards are proven to be destructive: they diminish the intrinsic motivation present in students.

Getting back to the titled quote, what I am trying to justify here is if we as teachers opted and adopted the teaching methodology called Project Based Learning or Activity Based Learning more in other grades as compared to preschool things would turn out quite interesting for the students as well the teachers.
PBL or project-based learning is an authentic learning method & experience in which students collaborate & identify a real-world problem and develop its solution. It incorporates standards across content areas, and takes place over an extended period of time. Students gain knowledge and skills by working & Investigating.
Topic:
You can choose any topic from any subject (like a letter/grammar, Number/Athematic problems) or anything that is completely random out of the box like what would you do if you were in a deserted island and what is your scape plan. You can also create a topic based environment for your students.
Content:
What standards you want to set for the topic as if what content areas (knowledge/ skill) you want your student to learn from this experience.
Creating a Puzzle or setup:
You can always DIY a puzzle or a project based setup according to your topic to give a physical expect to what you are trying to attain from your students for example; write lowercase letters (a-z) on to a sheet of paper and then cut it in half, mix them up in a basket and ask your students to complete the half by finding the correct letter.
Product:
How well did the child do to achieve the task, how they intended to tackle it, basically with what strategy & What might your students create to showcase what they learned depending on the Topic.
As I always giveaway free homeschooling resources here is a freebie of PBL planning guide for all the teachers who are planning to pursue Activity Based or Project Based Learning.
